A crucifix. Holy water. Rosary. Sage sticks. None of these things have inherent power on their own. They are mere objects, made by humans, and have no effect on the supernatural world. Per se...
Although the objects have no power on their own, they may be imbued with power from other sources. Just as Annabelle was used as a conduit for an evil entity, objects may be used by the divine to assist us in battle with evil forces. Sidenote: "Holy" water is not "magic" water. It is created from normal tap water being blessed by a priest. "Holy" comes from the Greek word agios which means, "dedicated or consecrated to God for a religious purpose." Just because a priest blessed normal tap water does not imbue it with anti-evil properties. Likewise, a wooden crucifix does not have vampire slaying (if their were vampires) properties. BUT, God can utilize these man-made objects and work through them (just as evil worked through Annabelle). It is the moment when we put our faith and trust in these objects alone that we lose the battle. Our faith and trust must be in the One who has the power to defeat evil. We may use these objects as a conduit of power to aid us in our battle.
Another important topic is the power of evil. So many people today, with the misinformation of Hollywood, believe that Satan and evil are more powerful than the divine. They are not. Satan and his demons are "created" beings. God has the ability to crush Satan with just a word from his mouth. I believe in God. Conversely, I also believe Satan exists. (Satan does not want us to know he exists). I believe in Angels, and I also believe in demons. Demons are former angels that rebelled against God and were cast out of heaven. Therefore, demons have equivalent powers of angels. Satan is an angel, maybe an archangel, but none-the-less, an angel who was CREATED by God. Therefore, not as powerful as the divine.
However, demons are powerful. They are far more powerful than us. We are like ants in their site. Their desire is to eradicate humans. They hate us. They can, and would, rip us to shreds in a second. Can they? Yes, they have much power. But if they hate us that much, why don't they? Remember, they are on the same playing field as angels, and Biblical angels have wiped out entire armies of humans with no effort. However, it is my firm belief that there exists a divine law which prevents demons from wiping out the human race. God has put a barrier in place that prevents demons from harming us... directly. Of course, demons can try to manipulate us and make us do things we wouldn't normally do. They can tempt us, harass us, oppress us, and in extreme cases, inflict superficial damage (scratches, etc). Even though they cannot kill us directly, they bring many people to the point of suicide or influencing them to bring harm to others. This is their number one and final goal in hauntings. First, they isolate someone vulnerable, then they break them down, then they manipulate them into taking their own life. This is why it is so important to identify a haunting in the beginning stages, or infestation stage, and get rid of the evil influence quickly before someone is targeted.
